Bait – Cover Reveal

Another one!? Oh yes! Got another cover reveal for you guys. This one is stunning.
I’m currently finishing up two books. One I’ve been reading for about 2 weeks, it’s been a bit of a push. Also the book is a little big. The other is an e-book which takes me longer because, if you can believe it, I don’t actually have an e-reader! Hah! Typically I use my phone of my laptop which turns into a good sized tablet. Suffice it to say that a Kindle is definitely on my Christmas this year.

Lets get to that reveal! Bait debuted in April of 2013, what you’re seeing is the New cover. Honestly, I’m in love. The colors, sexy model with flowing dark hair and hellooooo lightning. If this doesn’t say badass I’m not really sure what does.

Welcome to Van Helsing Academy where dreams become nightmares, survival gets in the way of homework, and monsters secretly mingle with mortals.

If you like boring plots, annoying characters and a book you have to make yourself read– this is NOT the book for you. Enough said.- Quinn Loftis, USA Today Bestselling Author As the only living child of the great Van Helsing, you would think Bay-Lee has an extra advantage when joining her father’s school. Wrong! The other students resent her; an angry young hunter with the most amazing green eyes refuses to mentor her; and someone or some ‘thing’ is killing students on their birthdays. She knows her life is about to change in a big way when a dead rock star shows up in her room in the middle of the night. Then a reaper comes flying out of her closet to issue a warning. Something is happening in the Spirit Realm, something bad. Bay-Lee teams up with the gorgeous hunter and a mean-girl with a deadly secret to solve this mystery before they all die. Her birthday is coming up fast. Will her first year at Van Helsing Academy be her last?

Join us at Van Helsing Academy… if you dare.

Action-packed with unexpected twists, romance, and magic. Bait is the first book in the series. The language is mild, violence between monsters and hunters is satisfying, and the romance is more sweet than graphic. Hunter is the next book in the series. Bait by Kasi Blake was a great read! It’s full of twists and turns, secrets and betrayals, everything you could possibly want in a book that is quite simply unputadownable.- Readers Favorite Holy Fricken Moly!! From the very first page I was swept away, with surprises around every corner, kick-ass action, addictive characters and a love story for the ages, this story will have you hooked too. -Sassy Book Lovers

Bay-Lee stepped forward to lay a red rose on the coffin lid.
“I’m right here,” Nick said. His presence gave her a burst of strength. She straightened her back, standing tall, and turned to face him. He looked incredible. Her fingernails dug into the flesh of her palms. Pain helped. It kept her from losing her mind and throwing her arms around his ghostly form. She couldn’t touch him. Wraith or ghost, he wasn’t a solid mass anymore. Her hand passed through him whenever she forgot and reached out.
“This is my second funeral,” he said. She winced.
“Please don’t.”
“I wish I could hold you.”
She repeated the word, louder this time.
“You look absolutely incredible, so beautiful. You’re even beautiful when you cry. Did I ever tell you that?”
Her life was weird. She was in the cemetery with her dead boyfriend. Not only could she see him, she could hear him. The only thing she couldn’t do was touch him. Being with him and not being able to do something as simple as kiss his cheek was pure torture.
“I can’t believe you’re gone,” she said to the coffin.
“I’m not gone,” he said, his impatience showing.
“I’m right here.” Before she could argue the point, Alec returned.
“You did this,” he said.
“You killed my brother.” She gasped.
“Was Van in on it with you?” Nick stood between them.
“Everyone was so afraid Nick would become evil. You and Van did this to him.” Alec shouted,
“Admit it!”A vicious growl startled her. Werewolf? No. It was Nick.
“She didn’t kill me, you idiot! Leave her alone!” Alec got in her face.
“You don’t belong here! Go home.” Van and Bruce appeared in a flash. They each took an arm and walked him to his car. Bay-Lee watched, her entire body trembling with rage and grief. Keisha put an arm around her shoulders. Together, they left the cemetery. Bay-Lee refused to look back to see if Nick was following them. She told herself she didn’t care. Bay-Lee spoke quietly.
“Tyler Beck got a nationwide memorial service. He was mourned by millions, and he was only a musician. Nick is worth a hundred Tyler Becks, but no one cares he’s gone.”
“I care.” Keisha gestured to Mike who was waiting at the car for them, sunglasses hiding his swollen eyes from view.
“He cares.”
“Nick deserved better than this.” She glanced back at the grave.
“He was a hero, but people have no idea. They don’t care he’s dead.” She started crying again. It was impossible to hold back the flood of tears. Feeling humiliated, she climbed into the backseat of the limo. Keisha got in after her. The girl pulled Bay-Lee into a tight embrace.
“I’m sorry,” Keisha said, and this time she sounded like she meant it. That made Bay-Lee cry harder.

He was monstrous. His mom—a Polar bear driven south looking for a mate—his sire a Grizzly. The color of his thick coat was a mottled cream, tipped in reddish-brown. Small dark eyes gleamed as he gripped the log with long thick claws, rocking it back and forth before flipping it over. Fat white worms, crickets, and other various bugs fell to his greedy tongue. Winter had been long. The bushes rustled behind him. Snuffles and low growls raised the hair on the man’s neck. A large, bulky shadow moved on the outermost edge of his vision. A bear. The man crept slowly toward his rifle, leaning against the arm of a chair; his breath held tight in his chest. All might have been well but for the bellowing fear-filled shout from the river. The air shifted as the bear charged, almost as if the powerful thrust of the bear’s legs on the earth tore through the fabric of space and time.

About Caryn:

I wrote my first story in third grade. It was about an Oriole family.
I have a love for the written word and have devoured books by great authors over a reading lifetime of sixty years. I firmly believe in the notion that a writer must also be a reader. I also firmly believe I gained a veritable treasure trove of writing skills through my reading. Writers such as James Michener, JR Tolkein, Leon Uris, Robert Jordan, Carol O’Connell, Albert Payson Terhune, Anna Sewell, Edgar Allen Poe, and so many more I could list.
I sincerely hope you enjoy reading my books as much as I have enjoyed writing them.

The screams ripped at my heart as I listened to the desperation that permeated them, “Please don’t hurt me anymore,” the voice cried, “I told you, I don’t know what you’re talking about!”

The girl’s voice in my mind was a familiar one, and not in a good way either. Unwanted concern weaseled its way into my heart because there was genuine pain echoing in her words. I tried shaking off the unsettled emotions her pleas left in their wake and headed toward the librarian’s desk again. I didn’t want to care about whatever jam she’d gotten herself into. Suppressing the guilt that riddled me proved difficult, but for a short time, I
was successful. Mrs. Martin checked out my books and the inescapable feelings of guilt kept growing as the desperate cries continued. Finally, my conscience caught up with me as I reached for the door leading outside. A defeated sigh wiggled its way through my lips, and I cast my eyes upward because I couldn’t ignore this even if I wanted to.
I needed to do the right thing, not because it was my first choice, but because I felt compelled to. My morals demanded nothing less. If someone was in trouble, you tried to help, even if you didn’t like them. That’s what my parents raised me to believe anyway, and so it didn’t make a difference that the girl’s voice belonged to Lydia Nostredame—the single biggest bane of my existence. Hate is a strong word, but my feelings toward Lydia were something dangerously close to that. My gut told me not to get involved, to
ignore my conscious and leave instead. Unfortunately, my intuition was next to never wrong. Maybe I should have listened to it. However, my views of right and wrong were a force to be reckoned with, and they weren’t pulling any stops. The two opposing sides battled it out as I stood there with my hand on the knob. After a few moments of inner turmoil, my moral stance won out. So I left the door and headed back into the library. Lydia’s cries ricocheted through my head like a stray bullet looking for a mark. They became tortured screams as I hurried in the direction my mind told me they were coming from.
“Ms. Shipton,” Mrs. Martin said sternly. “We do not run through the Library!”
I cringed at the sharpness of her tone and slowed my pace to appease the librarian. As soon as that same group of snickering girls snagged the stoic woman’s attention, I darted forward. Lydia’s screams had grown to a deafening intensity. Like the tolling of church bells, they drowned out every other sound. The sharp shrill of them poked at my temples, and the pain was worse than any migraine I’d ever had. My feet carried me across the familiar  parts of the library and into the further reaches which were seldom ever visited—by anyone. That should have been my first clue.
“Stairs—dark, ominous stairs, of course; why wouldn’t that be the case,” I sarcastically mumbled as I came to a door.
I assumed I’d just never noticed the stairs. After all, I’d only ventured to this part of the library maybe once before. The stair’s door was only partially open but had it been closed I would have thought it was a broom closet. The stairs twisted down into the unknown depths, dimly lit, and narrowing by the second. I was starting to feel as if they might spiral on forever when I finally reached a stone floor. The smell of musty tomes and aged ink filled the stagnant air. There were rows upon rows of shelving easily fifteen feet high. Layers of dust covered sheet draped chairs and tables. Cobwebs, also thick with grime, adorned most everything in this hidden library.
“Please stop, I don’t know what you’re talking about. I swear—I don’t know anything,” Lydia screamed, but it was weaker than before.
I was close enough by then to hear her conventionally. Her voice was drenched in terror and quivering with tears. It echoed and bounced off the milled stone walls of this underground secret I quietly snuck through. Once again my gut adamantly insisted that I turn back, but I stubbornly ignored it. My tendency to be good-natured had baited and lured me into the situation entirely. There would be no turning back no matter how much my intuition screamed at me. I slinked through the columns of shelved books as the feeling of danger settled over my skin like static cling on a warm blanket. I glanced at my arm as goose bumps raced across its tawny surface and the thin layer of peach fuzz stood on end. The sensation sent an unsettling shiver running down the length of my spine. The further in I moved through the rows the thinner the air seemed to become. It felt like I was trying to breathe around a piece of food lodged in my throat. Sweet smelling smoke wafted around me in a lazy wisp as I stood at the edge of a row of books. I recognized the scent immediately as sweet grass, a common reagent used in spells.

Present Time
On television, they never tell you how cold it is.
They might show you the dimly lit room or the hard, uninviting chairs—stark reminders that you have no power here. They may depict the lonesome table separating you from the elderly agent with the stone-grey eyes. But those cop shows never depict what a chilly affair an FBI interrogation truly is. If their aim is to make this process as intimidating as possible—it’s working.
I wrap my hands around bare shoulders, fingertips far colder than the skin exposed by my red tank top. Brilliant move, Fern. Wear a scarf, but forget your jacket. Stifling a shudder, I try to meet the sharp gaze of Agent Barstow standing rigidly across from me.
“I don’t know where you’re from, miss Johnson—but in LA, state-of-the-art buildings don’t just crumble.” His voice is gravelly, matching the jagged lines of his dark skin and weathered face.  “Federal buildings, no less. There one minute and the next…destroyed.”
His tone chills me even more, and I tug nervously on my scarf. His arms slowly unwind from his chest as he takes a deliberate two steps toward me. “We’ve had everyone on the disaster—CIA, local police, firemen…heck, we even called NASA. No one can find a plausible reason why a skyscraper, in excellent repair, would collapse like that. No one, that is, except you.”
I fight the urge to bolt for the door as he leans down, palms flat on the table, so close I can make out the creases on his dark suit. “You warned us of an attack in that area two weeks ago. How did you know?”
I suck in a deep breath as his voice lowers, dark fists tightening on the edge of the table. “Are you involved with a terrorist organization?”
I almost laugh at his words, at how they couldn’t be farther from the truth. I’m here to save LA, not destroy it. To save everyone. And I don’t have much time—none of us do. If I can’t gain this man’s trust, a shattered building is nothing compared to what will come next.
“No, sir.” I shove my shaking hands beneath my legs as I glimpse a pair of lucid blue eyes over the agent’s shoulder. They shouldn’t be there—and I know not to stare. But those eyes that only I can see are the reason I warned the FBI in the first place. Their owner the reason I’m even sitting in this room.
Licking my lips, I keep my attention on Barstow. I’ve wanted this for years. Someone to listen. Really listen. And it’s the FBI, no less. Be careful here.
When I open my mouth, the words are calm and steady. I hope they’re convincing—they have to be convincing. “I knew about the incident, Agent Barstow, because my friend warned me.” Throat suddenly dry, I look away. “My imaginary friend.
