The Alienation of Courtney Hoffman Book Review

courtney-hoffmanAuthor: Brady G. Stefani

Publisher: Spark Press

Genre: YA, Sci-Fi

Pages: 282

Fifteen year old Courtney wants to be normal like her friends. But there’s something frighteningly different about her—and it’s not just the mysterious tattoo her conspiracy-obsessed grandfather marked her with before he disappeared. She’s being visited in her bedroom at night by aliens claiming to have shared an alliance with her grandfather. And imaginary or not, they’re starting to to take over her mind. “Mental illness is a slippery slope,” her mother warns her.

The last thing Courtney wants to do is end up crazy and dead like her grandfather did. But what about the tattoo? And the aliens trying to recruit her? With her new alien-savvy friend Agatha and her apocalyptic visions, Courtney begins connecting the dots between the past, present and future—of her bloodline, and the ancient history that surrounds it. Is she going insane, like her family claims her grandfather did, or is she actually a “chosen one” with ancestral connections to another world? Either way, Courtney has a mission: untangle her past, discover the truth, and stop the apocalypse before it’s too late for everyone.”

My Thoughts:

……………………Soooo, this was a DNF for me. I tried really hard to finish this. The premise sounds so promising. I actually thought this was going to be a book about mental illness. Nope. It wasn’t. I got about halfway? So I’d say that’s a pretty good effort. Unfortunately there came a point where I was just dreading picking this up and realized it was time to call it quits.
If you go to the Goodreads page for this you’ll see that a lot of people enjoyed this book. It has so many 5 and 4 star ratings! So it would appear that I’m one of the very select few who did not enjoy it. Let me tell you why………..

Courtney, while 15, acted more like she was in middle school. To her credit she does very much want to get help. The way that she pursues this notion is ridiculous. She recklessly goes to a doctor who does his research in the basement of a rundown building. Where he drugs her and does who know what while she’s out. Courtney doesn’t even tell anyone that she’s there. Also she almost freaking goes back!!!……..WTF!?
As if that’s not bad enough she puts her trust in someone she met at a Psychiatric Hospital. Together they seek out some bar in the middle of whereversville. I mean Courtney just up and leaves, once again without telling a single other person where she’s going or who she’s with.

Courtney’s mom is a total and utter bitch. Seriously. At no point does she show any support for her own daughter. She has Courtney committed to a hospital because she basically can’t deal with her. She’s convinced that Courtney is doing this all for attention and will eventually corrupt her youngest daughter. The author wrote her with basically no maternal instincts. It certainly made for some good old fashioned frustration.

I could not get through this. Maybe if the author had picked one theme to go with I could have committed to at least fishing the book. It’s hard to say really where this was even going. First the main character is going crazy, no wait she’s actually seeing real Aliens, no wait there’s a God conspiracy and apparently whatever this is is in Courtney’s blood. Oh oh! Let’s not forget the impending apocalypse that has to be stopped.

I’m sorry……..what??? 90 percent of the time I was not only confused but very frustrated with the character. Which just led to my being annoyed with the whole book.
Honestly I don’t know what it would take to save this book for me. There’s a good chance that it’s just me. Not my cup of tea and all that. I like sci-fi as much as the next person. I also like reading/watching anything about mental health. You say the word conspiracy and you’ve got my attention for at least 12 hours easy. All of this could make for one hell of a story, if only directed a little be more neatly.
I actually feel really bad about not enjoying this book 😦 Especially since the author was so kind as to give me an audio version of it.
Unfortunately I’m going to have to give this a 1 out of 5 stars.

………not to a single person that I personally know. However, to my readers I say yes. For the most part this book got pretty good reviews. If you like a lot of ideas being thrown at you with little to no real detail at all, then go for it! Heck I hear there’s even a sequel on the way *cringes.* I will always encourage my readers to try a book out for themselves. You just never know, you might fall in love with it and change my mind about giving it another chance.

What Are You Reading Wednesday

Do you ever have those days where it just feels like a really good day? That was me today, right now that’s how I feel. Nothing special happened, nothing out of the ordinary. Work, vet appointment, back to work then home for the night. For some reason today, it was just really really fun. Maybe it’s just because I love my coworkers so much that just seeing them puts a smile on my face, maybe it was all the laughing and joking. Whatever it was, made my day incredible.

On to business! It’s Wednesday 🙂 and that means….it’s time for a new post.

What I’m Reading:

As promised, this week I’m reading,
A Thousand Pieced of You by Claudia Gray

This book is about a teenage girl, Marguerite Caine, who travels to different dimensions chasing her fathers killer. Using the inventions her parents created called the Firebird.
I’m only 8 pages into the book because well life and adulting. Which means that unfortunately I don’t have any kind of opinion formed yet.

What I’m Watching:

Only one of my top most favorite shows ever!
If you’ve never seen this show, shame on you. Why are we even friends?
In this show Fairy tales meet reality and it, is, awesome. All the classics from Snow White to Peter Pan are here. Not to mention modern day tales like Frozen, Brave and Aladdin! What Are You Reading Wednesday Mix Up/Febuary TBR

That’s right, I’m gonna mix things up just a little bit. Don’t worry, it’s nothing you haven’t seen before on here it’s just something I haven’t done in a while. It’s only the first but already I’ve started on my next read.

What I’m Reading:

Currently I’m about halfway through,
The Alienation Of Courtney Hoffman by Bradi G. Stefani

Courtney-Hoffman.jpgSo I’m not going to put the whole blurb here like usual because it feels repetitive when I do the same thing on the reviews. Let me just tell you about it so far.

Courtney is a 15 year old girl who at the age of 5 endures a very traumatic ordeal with her grandfather. He basically tries to kill her because he’s trying to save her from being taken by aliens. Yep that’s right. Aliens.
Now 10 years later Courtney is suffering night terrors and reliving horrible memories. Only now these night terrors are happening when she’s wide awake!
Everyone, including Courtney, think she’s just crazy. Suffering some mental health issue. Is she? Or is she really being visited by aliens and everyone else is wrong?

So far this book has me angry, confused as heck and looking behind my back to make sure there’s no one there. It’s a little creepy! Basically what I’m saying is it’s pretty good so far.

What I’m Watching:

What bookworms have been saying for years.

How come no one told me Season 4 of Sherlock has already started!? There are three episodes out. That’s three episodes I haven’t watched. Ok 2 because I recently watched episode 1. If you haven’t seen it I’m not going to spoil it for you. I will say this though. WHOA! I really didn’t expect blank to blank! And what was Blank thinking talking to that blank? Hmm?! I’m very disappointed.

What I’m Listening To:

Love Triangle by RaeLynn

So here’s a couple of really fun facts about me. First off I’m what you would call a Texafornian. I was born and raised in Texas ❤ but was forced to leave my precious home state due to my step-dad’s job. We moved a couple times but ultimately ended up in California. Where I will probably be for the rest of my life. Going back and forth between here and Texas.
Secondly, I LOVE country music. To me, Country music is home. And I get homesick a lot so I listen to Country every. Single. Day.
Another fact, this one not so fun, I’m a child of divorce. I was born that way. No really, my parents were divorced before I was even born. RaeLynns song was on the radio one day as I was driving home from work and it hit me. She’s absolutely right! Being a child of divorce really IS being part of a love triangle.
Even if you don’t like country, just press that play button anyway. Give it a listen, it doesn’t have all that twang that most Country music haters can’t stand. And no it’s not slow and depressing. It’s surprisingly upbeat.

My February TBR

This year I’m determined to stick with a minimum of 2 books a month. If I get through more than that then hey…….winning!

  1. A Thousand Pieces Of You
  2. Roseblood
  3. (If I get this far) Caraval

I’m really hoping that last one comes in February’s OwlCrate box 😉 fingers crossed. Look at those covers!!!! Holy cow they’re gorgeous ❤

That’s all I have for you guys today. What are you reading, watching or listening to this week? 🙂 let me know!
